Two Most Common Home Damages Caused by Winter Weather

There are some types of home damage that can be difficult to avoid during Northeast DFW winters. Today we will share with you the two most common cold weather problems and how you can prevent them.
First on our list is frozen pipes. They are a common problem but there are lots of solutions for prevention. If the forecast is projected to drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, try some of the ideas below.

  • Keep the heat on. Keeping the house warm will keep your pipes warm. While it may seem attractive to save money on your heat, the price of repairs following a burst pipe is not worth the savings.
  • If the temperatures drop drastically, let your faucets drip to keep them from freezing.
  • Call a plumber immediately if your pipes freeze.

Ice dams are another big risk due to frigid cold weather. The key here is to take precautions before it’s cold outside.

  • Make sure your attic is insulated. Good insulation keeps warm air out of the attic preventing snow from melting on the roof.
  • Improve ventilation. The key is to keep your attic cool. Ventilation such as an eave, soffit, ridge or gable will allow cold air in.
  • If an ice dam does appear on your roof, call Paul Davis Restoration of Northeast DFW as soon as you can.
