Get Your House in Shape for Fall to Prevent Property Damage

During the fall, the potential for water damage, storm damage and fire damage increases and Paul Davis Restoration of Northeast DFW wants to make sure you are prepared. Here is a list of ideas that can help you avoid dangerous and costly property damage in the coming months.

Keep things dry. Look at your caulking around exterior doors and windows and repair any damaged areas. If you notice gaps in areas where wiring or pipes enter the home, these should be caulked as well. Separating water from these spaces can prevent water damage and mold formation.

· Protect your roof. Inspect your property for dead or damaged tree branches, especially any that overhang the roof. These should be safely removed by a professional if they are above the first story of your home.

· If your house has a wood-burning fireplace, have your chimney and firebox cleaned before you light it up this season. Burning wood can create a buildup of creosote, which can cause a serious chimney fire if not kept in check.

· Does your roof have missing shingles or other damage? Take care of repairs immediately. We recommend using binoculars to take a preliminary look, and contact a qualified roofing contractor if repairs are needed. A leaking roof can lead to serious issues in the future, even structural damage, so prevention is the key.
